Old shed becomes tech centre
Update 9 April 2021: Official opening of the tech centre – see photos below.
Update 26 February 2021: It’s raining. Every day for weeks. It has been difficult to paint the buildings, but now we are finally starting to see an end product.
Update 28 January 2021: The roofs are in place, tiles have been laid inside the classrooms, cobblestones have been laid outside, and the electric system has been installed. The buildings will now be painted and we are hoping that the classrooms will be finished by the start of school on 15 February 2021.
Update 30 November 2020: The construction is going well and we are soon to see the roof be installed, see photos in the gallery below.
Background
When our founder Mari Maurstad visited us in September 2019, we had big dreams of turning an old shed at Gratton into classrooms. Now the dream becomes a reality and thanks to fantastic sponsors and a little unexpected support from Rotary International, we are building two state-of-the-art classrooms during the autumn of 2020.
Gratton School, which is owned and run by Zulufadder, has become very popular and we have got many new learners in recent years. In order to be able to offer more places to the Zulufadder children, as well as increase access to good education in the area, we need more classrooms.
By the end of 2020, we will build two digital classrooms and expand Gratton School as planned from January 2021.
Students from the Oslo School of Architecture and Design (AHO) have designed the beautiful classrooms. They are being sponsored by our main sponsor NutraQ, the students at AHO, as well as private sponsors. Thank you so much!
Support from Rotary International
Earlier this year, we sent an application to the Rotary Foundation in Chicago to get technology equipment for the classrooms – and we got a YES! They are supporting us with $60,000 to buy iPads, electronic tablets, projectors, software, as well as support for teacher training. The Rotary clubs in Førde, Florø and Sogndal (all Norway), as well as Rotary district 2250 participated in a matching grant with Rotary Foundation.
