This project is Zulufadders house building project.
Since 2006 we have provided small, simple houses for those children who have needed a new roof over their heads.
Since the founding of Zulufadder, it is undeniable that the children involved in the project have received a better life situation. However, many are still living under very poor conditions. We have seen up to 15 orphans living with relatives or neighbors. In some cases, children alone. There are no means to do the simplest improvements in mud huts or sheds where they live.

The story behind the project
It all started in November 2006 when Mari and Silvia visited a girl of six years named Nokwanda and her grandmother. What Mari and Silvia were about to witness would remain forever in their memories. They entered the house, looked around and both started crying. There were rats running around and it was all just unbearable. Right then it was decided that a new house would be built. Many thanks to the Norwegian Theatre in Oslo and local builders, the house was completed before Christmas in 2006.
Volunteers
Stian from Hønefoss (Norway) came to Zulufadder as a volunteer in February 2007. He became so struck by the miserable living conditions in the area, that when he returned to Norway he decided to start his own House Fund. This was the beginning of the house building project. Stian did the rounds in Hønefoss and collected $15,000 – just for housebuilding – in a few weeks. Thank you, Hønefoss!
Stian came back to Zululand to begin the construction. He has continued to volunteer with Zulufadder several times over the years. The first half of the year in 2009 he worked with local construction workers and built four new houses.
By July 2020, we have built 56 new houses, and have also fixed 20 houses – with the installation of a new roofs, windows and general refurbishment.
Norwegian architect
Architect Ellen Enger has drawn houses with a plan adapted to the environmental conditions in Zululand. Ellen decided that she and other architects would help with the project. In addition Ellen designed a hall in Simunye sponsored by Erna and Knut Eng Children’s Fund.
Sponsors
- Jeweller Heyerdahl in Oslo designed the diamond ring called ZULU. All profits go to our house project.
- In October 2008, the Rotary district in Oslo had a big concert to raise money for Zulufadder. They raised money for 15 new houses!
- The rest of the houses are sponsored of individual sponsors.
House by house
We build simple houses, without electricity and without water. The homes have no toilet, bathroom or kitchen, but they are homes nonetheless. The houses provide families with shelter and security, as children are protected from the weather and the doors have locks on them. We want all of our children to feel safe.
Upgrading of houses
Some houses only need some renovation work– such as a leaking ceiling for example. In such instances, it is easiest and cheapest to replace the roof and possibly the doors or windows.
