Technology at Gratton School

Technology at Gratton School

At Gratton, we’ve always wanted to give our students the best of both worlds – traditional schoolbooks alongside modern tools. We’ve tested laptops, iPads, and e-books, and seen how much technology can open up. But we’ve also learned that balance is key. When screens take up too much space, concentration quickly slips away. That’s why we’ve chosen to adjust course.

From books to digital tools – and back again

Our youngest students have always used regular books. For the senior grades (8–12), we introduced a period where everyone had to use their own laptop with e-books. It worked in many ways, but we also saw the downside: chatting with friends and gaming during lessons – and less and less focus on the subject.

From the 2026 school year, we are therefore returning to printed books for these classes. At the same time, school-provided computers will remain available in the Tech Center and Media Center, where digital tools truly make a difference.

Learning materials

Books are – and will remain – the backbone of teaching. At the same time, we’ve benefitted greatly from donations of both printed books and digital resources from Norway.

The Tech Center

One of the most visible projects is the Tech Center – a dedicated building that inspires and equips both students and teachers. Here, computers and resources give teaching a real boost, and the center serves as a meeting place for knowledge and creativity.

Stable internet

In the beginning, we managed with a simple microwave line for internet. Today, thanks to a Norwegian company, the school has fiber – giving teachers and students safe, stable access.

Past projects – still in use

Over the years, we’ve received invaluable help in acquiring laptops, PCs, and iPads. Even though we are now moving back to printed books for the senior grades, these devices are still in daily use – in the Tech Center, in the Media Center, and as support in teaching where digital tools provide an advantage.

The road ahead

We’ve made important choices about how technology should be used at Gratton, and we believe we’ve found a healthier balance between books and digital tools. But the road ahead is still challenging.

Our most pressing need today is ensuring that all students have good, up-to-date textbooks. Many must be replaced regularly, and we still depend on support to provide what’s needed in class. At the same time, the PCs in the Tech Center and Media Center need updating and replacement at intervals. Without this, technology quickly becomes outdated and loses its value for teaching.

Gratitude

Thanks to gifts and equipment from many generous supporters, Gratton can offer education that keeps pace with the times. We know that technology can be a wonderful tool – but it can never replace warm teachers, solid books, and the community of the classroom.
