Three Women on a Journey in Zululand | Big Smiles and Big Hearts

Last week, Zulufadder was buzzing with activity as Helle, Janne, and Gunn, three energetic women from Norway, arrived for another visit. This was far from their first trip to Zululand. All three have been here before, and for Janne, it was her impressive 13th visit! With so many trips behind them, they know the area like the back of their hand – the roads, the villages, and the people. Everywhere they went, they were greeted like old friends, and the joy of reunion was palpable.

Fully loaded cars and big smiles

The ladies dove straight into their tasks. Cars were packed to the brim with food supplies, toothbrushes, and toys – ready to spread joy and a touch of luxury to those who needed it most. They hit the familiar roads, eager to surprise and delight both young and old.

Rubber boots and hot weather

One of the week’s big highlights was distributing rubber boots. Not only are they practical for working in vegetable gardens or navigating rough terrain, but they also carry serious status! Despite temperatures soaring over 30 degrees with the sun blazing down, no one was too hot to try on their new boots. The ladies themselves got a taste of the challenge, working in gardens under the sweltering 37-degree heat, earning newfound respect for those who fetch water from far distances every day.

A visit to the Doremi Kindergarten with Popi

At Doremi Kindergarten, children with bright smiles and excited eyes were ready to welcome their Norwegian visitors. The three women brought sandwiches, bananas, and apples – a much-appreciated breakfast for many. Popi, the heart and soul of the kindergarten, greeted them with her warm and infectious energy. New toys like hula hoops and play tents sparked cheers and laughter, with children diving into joyful activity.

The joy of a mattress

Many in Zululand still sleep on bamboo mats on earthen floors, so receiving a mattress feels almost like winning the lottery. The smiles were enormous as the women handed out mattresses, food, and clothes. It was a powerful reminder that even the simplest things can create immense happiness – both for those receiving and those fortunate enough to give.

A farewell with hearts full of memories

After more than a week filled with laughter, tears, and meaningful encounters, it was time to say goodbye. As Helle put it: “We have so much to learn from the Zulu people’s way of finding joy in the little things. We return home with memories that will last a lifetime.” ❤️

These three women have shown that genuine dedication and closeness to the people you help can forge bonds that last a lifetime. ❤️
