Prosjekt ZULUBYGG

ZULUBYGG is Zulufadder's house building project.
Since 2006, we have built 62 simple houses for families who really need a new roof over their heads.

The story behind Zulubygg

From the beginning of Zulufadder until today, we see that the children who are part of the project have had a better life. One thing that has not improved, however, is the living conditions. For many, it is very poor. We have seen up to 15 orphans living with relatives or neighbors. In some cases, children live alone. There are no funds to make the simplest improvements to the earthen huts or sheds they live in.

It all started in November 2006. Mari and Silvia visited a 6-year-old girl named Nokwanda and her grandmother. What happened next Mari and Silvia will never forget. They went into the house, looked around and both burst into tears. Rats were running around and the whole thing was just indescribably horrible. It was decided then and there that a new house would be built. Thanks to the Norwegian Theatre and local builders, the house was completed before Christmas 2006.

Volunteer efforts

Stian from Hønefoss came to Zulufadder as a volunteer in February 2007. When he returned home to Norway, the memories of miserable living conditions were so strong in him that he decided to start his own housing fund. This was the start of ZULUBYGG. Stian went around Hønefoss and collected NOK 80,000 for house building within a few weeks. Thank you very much, Stian and Hønefoss!

Stian of course returned to Zululand to follow the construction. He has been with Zulufadder as a volunteer several times since, and he spent the first half of 2009 with the local builders as they set up four new houses.

As of August 2021, we have built 59 new houses, and additionally fixed 20 houses - with new roofs, windows and general renovation.

Norwegian architect

Architect Ellen Enger has designed the houses, which have a layout adapted to the conditions in Zululand. Ellen decided that she and other architects would help. They have since steadily contributed money to the construction account. Ellen has also designed the hall in Simunye, which is sponsored by the Erna and Knut Engs Children's Fund.

• Diamond ring ZULU by Heyerdahl and is designed by Heyerdahl Goldsmith. All proceeds go to Zulubygg.

• In October 2008, the Rotary district in Oslo held a big concert to raise money for Zulufadder. They raised money for 15 new houses!

• The rest of the houses are sponsored by individual sponsors.

Battle by battle, house by house

We build simple houses, without electricity and without running water. No toilet, bathroom or kitchen, but it is a home. In this home they are given the opportunity to create security. The children are protected from the elements, and the door can be locked when darkness falls. We all want our children to feel safe.

Zulufadder wants to be able to give as many people as possible a safe place to sleep at night through Zulubygg, but we need your help. Without support and help from Norway, we would not be able to do what we do.

The houses have been built in two different sizes; two- and three-bedroom.
